Flash – Nikon SB600

Monday, December 29th, 2008

I picked up the Nikon SB600 speedlight flash for our Nikon D60 as a Christmas gift to Rebecca & myself.  It was hard to not try out it before Christmas morning, however, on December 25th we were able to put it through its paces.

We like the SB600 speedlight and use it often, which is far more than I can say for the camera’s built in flash which I have permanently taped shut.  Our favorite feature is the rotating head which can bounce the flash off of the walls and ceiling to diffuse the light and have it light the subject from a non-direct angle.

More flash photography to come as we figure it all out, and once I sort through the 500 photos we took over the holidays.

Akismet, Spam & iPhone

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

I use the Akismet comment spam filter for WordPress to detect approximately 350 spam comments per day. Interestingly, most of those comments are on a single post which mentions the iPhone. I am not a spam expert, but this makes it pretty obvious that comment spammers are targeting posts based on keywords. I wonder what some of the other keywords might be?

Electronics:
apple, iPod, Nano, iPhone, Google, Microsoft, g1, android, blackberry, perl, storm

Pharmaceuticals:
Viagra, prescription drugs

Self “Improvement”:
weight loss, enhancement, enlargement, surgical procedures, all natural

Feel free to comment with your own spam keywords, because I am sure Akismet is up for the challenge.

wordpress theme & stellar background from boedesign

Friday, December 26th, 2008

I finally got around to updating deleted theory’s wordpress theme. All in all it was straight forward, even for a programmer like me. A super special thanks goes out to my work neighbor Jordan Boesch of 76design, taxime.ca & boedesign.com fame for my stellar new background! Thanks Jordan!

Mustaches for Kids & le champion du monde

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Mustaches for Kids 2008 has come has ended, and we have raised $16,000 for the make-a-wish foundation of eastern ontario.  The razors have removed all traces of the staches.  However; our friend and fellow grower, Paul Galipau [lechampiondumonde.com], was kind enough to take our portraits during the Mustaches for Kids final Stache Bash.

There are some classic, dare I say epic mustaches and costumes.  Look for Magnum PI, Dr. Phil, Freddie Mercury, The Superfans, Mr. McFeely, Sgt. Slaughter, Hal Johnston,  Paul McCartney, Ray Lounsbury and MORE.

You can find the original set at: http://flickr.com/photos/paulgalipeau/sets/72157611202610943/ and you can browse Paul Galipeau’s photography at lechampiondumonde.com

Thanks again to all the grower’s, supporters & photographers! We will see you all next year!

WordPress 2.7

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Installed and ready to go. I really like the new interface as everything seems a little simpler and cleaner. The summary views for the statistics are nice, and I am making use of the QuickPress feature, which surprisingly lets you publish a post quickly from the dashboard.

Nice improvements so far, I am looking forward to diving a little deeper.

Maynard James Keenan {TOOL} on Wine Library TV

Monday, December 8th, 2008

I always have been, and still am a huge tool fan.  In fact I just bought undertow on vinyl last week.  Interesting that vin means wine in french?  Ok, I am reaching for a connection here, nonetheless it is strange to see MJK in a dress shirt talking about wine and the Detroit Lions.  Maynard James Keenan on Wine Library TV
